IFLA Helsinki

Before the formal start of IFLA 2012 in Helsinki the sessions of the Standard Committees take place. Our session was very well attended. Nearly all members were there and quite some ‘observers’. The agenda was published here earlier.

Evgeny Kuzmin (Chairman of IFAP Council) stressed the good relations of IFAP with the IL Section and memorized the communal activities, which culminated into the IFLA MIL recommendations and the Moscou Declaration. He expressed his wish to continue our work together.

If you want to follow the conference klik here on IFLA Express.

I will only report on the items that are relevant for the Section

Day 2 Satellite Tampere

The second day of the conference started with an inspiring keynote by Carol Kuhlthau; ‘Facillitating Learning Through Guided Inquiry’ . And was followed by Sessions and Workshops. Papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

The local committee did a great job.

At the end of the day quite some attendants went on to Helsinki for IFLA 2012.

Day 1 Satellite Tampere

On the first full day of the satellite after the welcome address from the Vice Rector there was the ‘Elizabeth Stone Memorial Lecture given by Prof Kirsti Lonka (University of Helsinki) and 24 presentations ( parallel in 4 sessions), a poster presentation session and 4 workshop …
So there was a lot to choose and to enjoy.

The workshop by Andrew Whitworth (University of Manchester) is already online:
'From information literacy to informed learning professional, development for a learning organization'

The day ended with a choice between a tour to one of four libraries or a visit to the School of Information Science of Tampere University.

Well, the day was not really over then, because there was a wonderful Conference Dinner afterwards.

Start of Satellite Tampere

Today the Tampare Satellite ‘The Road to Information Litercay: Librarians as Facilitators of Learning’ (http://iflasatellitetampere2012.wordpress.com/) started with a sightseeing tour (1,5 hour by bus) of Tampere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tampere).  Very interesting was the Kavleva Church.  http://www.tampereenseurakunnat.fi/kirkko_tampereella/in_english/churches#Kalevachurch. High as a cathedral but nothing on walls https://www.google.com/search?num=10&hl=nl&site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1024&bih=475&q=Kaleva+Church&oq=Kaleva+Church&gs_l=img.12...2295.9191.0.11557.
Then the welcome and networking session. 120 persons subscribed for the Satellite!!!!!!
Surprise: In the conference bag was a copy of the conference proceedings.
Roisin Gwyer, Ruth Stubbings, and Graham Walton (Eds.)

Project Information Literacy seeks volunteers

The USA's Project Information Literacy (PIL) is seeking further volunteer colleges and universities with calls to participate in forthcoming PIL research studies. In autumn they will begin "a year-long investigation of first-time freshmen in US colleges and universities" I think you have to be located in the USA. The PIL project does the actual research, only some time acting as liaison person is required.
